A Message to Graduate Students

Emília P. MartinsWelcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University! We are pleased that you have chosen or are considering IU as a place to continue your education. We would like to be as helpful as possible in assisting you in making the right decisions about your future.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers forty PhD programs and more than seventy masters programs. Visit our individual department pages for detailed information about their graduate programs, faculty, and admission policies.

Funding for graduate education is a crucial consideration for many students. Thus, the application for graduate admission serves as an automatic application for financial support offered by the department. New graduate students seeking financial support for graduate study should first discuss opportunities for graduate fellowships, associate instructorships, graduate assistantships, and research assistantships with their major departments. Departments can also provide information on how to apply for the following awards available to graduate students currently enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences: the John H. Edwards Fellowships (awarded annually in recognition of outstanding scholarship and community service), the Mikal Lynn Sousa Award for Excellence in Graduate Scholarship (awarded annually to an outstanding female Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science or in the Department of History), the McCormick Science Grants (awarded annually to two students in recognition of excellence in research and effective collaboration with faculty members in the sciences), and the College of Arts and Sciences Dissertation-Year Research Fellowships (awarded annually to advanced Ph.D. or M.F.A. candidates to enable these students to focus on work leading to the completion of their dissertations or thesis projects).

Graduate students may also wish to explore fellowships available through the University Graduate School, the list of student academic appointment vacancies maintained by the GradGrants Center, or to consider student loans, beginning with information from the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Travel grants (to conduct research or to present papers at major national and international conferences) are also available through individual departments, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate Professional Student Organization (GPSO).

Graduate students at Indiana University come from all over the United States and all over the world. The Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) represents the interests of all graduate students. It sponsors social events and provides practical information on a variety of topics such as housing in Bloomington, health care, and employment at IU. Additional resources can be found through the Office of Women’s Affairs, Black Graduate Student Association, Latino/a Graduate Student Association and the many other offices and student organizations that support graduate students.

Over twenty-five percent of our graduate students are international. The College recognizes that when accepting admission to Indiana University, these students confront the additional challenge of studying and teaching in a new culture and a second language. Visit our international student Web pages to learn about the many resources available to meet these challenges.

Finally, Indiana University and the larger Bloomington community are thriving cultural and recreation centers. Opportunities to enjoy theatre, film, lectures, and music abound. The university has a state of the art sport and recreational center and the state parks and rolling hills of southern Indiana offer occasions to take a break from the books and enjoy the outdoors.

This is just a sampling of the many opportunities, organizations, programs, and services that exist to enhance your educational experience at IU. The faculty and administration of the College of Arts & Sciences welcome you to Bloomington and wish you the best during your graduate studies.
